The 2000 Texaco Whitewater Slalom National Championships slalom site is located approximately 45 minutes east of Bakersfield on Highway 178 in scenic Kern Canyon, adjacent to Miracle Hot Springs and Hobo Campground, near Lake Isabella and about 20-25 minutes from Kernville, California.
The weather in August is typically warm and dry, with daytime highs of about ninety degrees, with low relative humidity. Cottonwoods, Sycamores, and other streamside trees provide ample shade. Rarely, tropical moisture will work its way up from Mexico, resulting in increased humidity, cloudiness, and a chance of a thunderstorm. Unlike many reservoirs, the water released from Lake Isabella is warm, and competitors should not need dry tops or other cold water gear.
En route to the site, boaters and spectators will enjoy seeing the spectacular rapids of the Cataracts of the Kern. The Cataracts is generally considered one of the best Class V runs in the country. The holes are big and the water is pushy and rapids such as V+ Quadruple Whatever challenge the country's top experts. The more moderate class IV+ Richbar and class IV Lucas Creek runs are also found on this stretch.
Miracle Hot Springs is the usual put-in for the class IV Miracle to Democrat run. This is the most popular summertime run in Southern California, and has numerous excellent playspots, so be sure to bring your play boat.
