Wettest Day in Driest Year? You know it's an unusual rain season when the wettest day of the water year is not earlier than April 20th. |
Friday's vigorous system produced 0.50 inch of rain at Downtown Los Angeles (USC). According to the NWS, this is the latest date in the water year that Los Angeles has recorded it's first day of 0.5 inch, or more, of rain. This is the most rain recorded at Downtown Los Angeles (USC) since May 22, 2006, when 0.67 inch of rain was measured. Barring any "hole-in-one" storms, it appears likely that Friday will be the only day the 0.5 inch rainfall benchmark is attained this water year. Sunday's trough tacked on another 0.04 inch of rain, bringing the water year total to 3.21 inches -- almost 12 inches below normal. If Los Angeles (USC) receives less than 1.21 inches of rain between now and June 30th, this water year (July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007) will become the driest since recordkeeping began in 1877. Scattered Showers in Southern
California. Downtown Los Angeles (USC) was one of just a few places in Southern California that received measurable rain yesterday as a result of moisture wrapping around a late season upper low. Downtown got soaked when a band of showers moved through the area. There was also some hail reported. |

The official NWS rain gauge for Los Angeles recorded 0.20 inches of rain, bringing the water year total to 2.67 inches -- almost 12 inches below normal. This is the most rain recorded at Downtown Los Angeles (USC) since February 22 when 0.38 of rain was measured. Unfortunately, the precipitation was very limited and did little to benefit rain starved Southern California. But official rain is official rain, and now if Los Angeles (USC) receives less than 1.75 inches of rain between now and June 30th, this water year (July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007) will become the driest since recordkeeping began in 1877. At this point in the season, a new record is more likely than not. We'll see! More information concerning Southern
