NDMC 12 Month SPI Thru June 2002 |
Weathernotes for Tuesday, July 9, 2002Downtown Los Angeles has experienced it's driest water year since record-keeping began in 1877. Only 4.42 inches of rain was recorded from July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. This was 29% of the 30 year seasonal norm. For more information see the archived NWS Public Information Statement. The 12-month Standardized Precipitation Index from the National Drought Mitigation Center shows the extent of the drought. For a description of various drought indices see Drought Indices by Dr. Michael J. Hayes Climate Impacts Specialist, NDMC. |
The June/July value of the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) was 0.845; which was about the same value as for May/June. According to Dr. Klaus Walter this ranks as the 13th strongest "El Niño" for May/June since 1950, and is a somewhat lower value than anticipated. A tabulation of several ENSO forecasts by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology National Climate Centre suggests that a warm ENSO state is probable this Winter. Generally, warm ENSO events are associated with above average rainfall in Southern California. For example see SOI - Precipitation Scatter Plots - South Coast California Climate Division (6).
